Apple tengah garap Mac Pro baru, juga siapkan iMac baru yang akan rilis tahun ini

Dalam sebuah kesempatan yang tak biasa, Apple mengumpulkan para jurnalis dan blogger untuk membahas Mac Pro dan beberapa hal lainnya. Apple yang biasanya tertutup mengenai produk yang akan dirilis kali ini membeberkan sejumlah rencana terkait lini Mac untuk kalangan profesional, Mac Pro. Dikutip dari Daring Fireball:

With regards to the Mac Pro, we are in the process of what we call “completely rethinking the Mac Pro”. We’re working on it. We have a team working hard on it right now, and we want to architect it so that we can keep it fresh with regular improvements, and we’re committed to making it our highest-end, high-throughput desktop system, designed for our demanding pro customers.

As part of doing a new Mac Pro — it is, by definition, a modular system — we will be doing a pro display as well. Now you won’t see any of those products this year; we’re in the process of that. We think it’s really important to create something great for our pro customers who want a Mac Pro modular system, and that’ll take longer than this year to do.

In the interim, we know there are a number of customers who continue to buy our current Mac Pros. To be clear, our current Mac Pro has met the needs of some of our customers, and we know clearly not all of our customers. None of this is black and white, it’s a wide variety of customers. Some… it’s the kind of system they wanted; others, it was not.

In the meantime, we’re going to update the configs to make it faster and better for their dollar. This is not a new model, not a new design, we’re just going to update the configs. We’re doing that this week. We can give you the specifics on that.

The CPUs, we’re moving them down the line. The GPUs, down the line, to get more performance per dollar for customers who DO need to continue to buy them on the interim until we get to a newly architected system.

Banyak yang mengira Apple sengaja mengabaikan lini Mac Pro demi berfokus pada perangkat iOS. Mengingat sejak dirilis di tahun 2013, Apple memang jarang mengeluarkan update untuk lini Mac kalangan profesional tersebut.

Salah satu penyebab mengapa Apple jarang memberikan update untuk Mac Pro adalah karena faktor desain yang diusungnya. Dengan desain tabung dimana di dalamnya terdapat banyak sekali komponen yang sangat padat, Apple mengalami kesulitan jika harus mengupdate beberapa komponen di dalamnya.

Untuk itulah Apple kemudian berencana untuk mendesain ulang Mac Pro dan menjadikannya modular sehingga pengguna ataupun Apple dapat mengupgradenya sesuai dengan kebutuhan. Dan sebagai Mac untuk kalangan profesional memang sudah seharusnya Apple memberikan keleluasaan bagi pengguna untuk dapat mengkostumisasi komponen di dalamnya sesuai dengan kebutuhan.

John Ternus, Hardware Engineering VP dalam diskusi tersebut mengatakan:

I think one of the foundations of that system was the dual GPU architecture… and for certain workflows, certain classes of pro customers, that’s a great solution. But… to Phil’s point, “Pro” is so broad that it doesn’t necessarily fit all the needs of all the pros.

The way the system is architected, it just doesn’t lend itself to significant reconfiguration for somebody who might want a different combination of GPUs… That’s when we realized we had to take a step back and completely re-architect what we’re doing and build something that enables us to do these quick, regular updates and keep it current and keep it state of the art, and also allow a little more in terms of  adaptability to the different needs of the different pro customers.

Selain tengah menggarap Mac Pro, Apple juga dikabarkan lagi membuat layar yang akan dirilis secara bersamaan tahun depan.

Sementara menyiapkan Mac Pro baru, Apple memberikan upgrade yang mulai dapat dipesan dengan harga $2999. Spesifikasinya mengalami peningkatan yaitu mengusung 6-core Intel Xeon processor, dual AMD FirePro D500 GPUs dan 16GB RAM. Untuk 8-core processor dan dual D700 GPU dihargai $3999.

Dalam diskusinya tersebut Apple juga dikabarkan tengah mengerjakan iMac yang akan dirilis tahun ini. Belum diketahui upgrade apa yang akan diberikan oleh Apple pada iMac terbarunya nanti.

Mana Mac Pro baru?

Tidak ada Mac Pro baru tahun ini. Dalam acara pengumuman Macbook Pro bulan lalu, Apple sama sekali tak menyinggung rencana atau petunjuk mengenai hadirnya desktop Mac tersebut. Marco Arment dalam sebuah postingan blognya menulis beberapa alasan mengapa Apple seharusnya tetap menaruh perhatian dan mengupdate lini Mac Pro. Dalam tulisannya:

It’s the only pro-grade, workstation-class operating system that has ever been easy to use and nice enough that we wanted to spend more time at our workstations.

And hidden behind our pro apps and terminal windows are the shared photo streams we made last night, showing pictures of our children to their grandparents, who are running the exact same operating system.

Technology changes, markets change, and people change, but some moments in history are uniquely high points that are never quite matched.

The world has never seen anything like macOS, and nothing will truly replace it. If we’re forced to move to something else, it’ll be painfully, inescapably, perpetually worse.

Keep the Mac Pro alive, Apple, so none of us have to make that choice.

The rest of the lineup is great for almost everyone. Almost. But please don’t abandon those of us who truly want or need the best computers in the world, because if they’re not Macs, they’re not good enough.

Bagi para profesional, Mac Pro masih menjadi pilihan terbaik untuk mendukung pekerjaan. Prosesor, GPU dan RAM yang dapat diupgrade sesuai dengan kebutuhan menjadikan Mac Pro pilihan terbaik dibanding iMac. Salah satu alasan mengapa Apple membutuhkan waktu yang cukup lama untuk mengupgrade lini Mac mereka termasuk Macbook Pro yang baru saja dirilis adalah ketergantungannya dengan Intel selaku pemasok prosesor.

Pada Macbook Pro versi 2016, Apple hanya menyediakan opsi RAM maksimal 16GB. Keputusan ini diambil untuk menyeimbangkan performa dan daya tahan battere Macbook Pro dalam penggunaan sehari-hari. Selain itu LPDDR3 yang digunakan oleh Apple juga terbatas pada maksimal RAM 16GB per chip. Lebih jauh, Intel Skylake prosesor yang digunakan pun belum mendukung protokol LPDDR4 yang sanggup mengakomodir kebutuhan RAM lebih banyak.

No doubt the Mac Pro is in a bad spot. Apple skipped a generation of Xeons and is now waiting of Intel to get Skylake-E ready. As Apple is stuck waiting on Intel, the Mac Pro grows older by the day.

Jelas terlihat bahwa ketergantungan Apple dengan Intel mempengaruhi jadwal update perangkat Mac.

Pertanyaannya: Akankah Apple menggunakan prosesor bikinannya sendiri untuk perangkat Mac sama halnya dengan penggunaan prosesor A-series di perangkat iOS? Mungkin saja. Tetapi tidak dalam waktu dekat.
